canon background

Jason is a small-town country boy, born and raised. Jason lives in the small town of Bon Temps, Louisiana, and for the most part, his life was uneventful. Jason isn't the brightest apple in the drawer (that's how that saying goes, right?), but he's done pretty well with himself for his town. He graduated high school as the star quarterback, and though he didn't get the college scholarship or NFL contract he was hoping for, he still managed to get a steady construction job, have his own house, and of course, have lots and lots of sex with lots and lots of women. It's not his ideal life, but he was pretty content, all things considered.

That is, until vampires revealed themselves to the world, and one of them came to live in Bon Temps and romance his little sister.

Bill Compton is a vampire that came to his hometown of Bon Temps after being away since the Civil War, and ever since, Jason's life hasn't been the same. Technically, Jason's troubles started before Bill came to town, since his sleeping around finally got him into real trouble. He had rough sex with a fangbanger (a series term for humans that have sex with vampires), and she turned up dead the next day. Not quite remembering his encounter other than being rough, Jason assumed that he did kill her, at least until a her secret filming of the act showed her untying herself and laughing at Jason. Again, not the brightest apple in the drawer. But even though he was cleared of these charges, Jason ends up sleeping with another girl that ends up dead, because his luck is just that bad, and also ends up addicted to V—vampire blood.

His addiction worsens until some of his drug-induced sex causes him to miss the news of his grandmother's death, but even then, he's not quite able to stop himself. Getting more desperate, since his source in Bon Temps cut him off, he goes to a nearby vampire bar to look for blood from the source, but meets another V addict, Amy, who saves him from getting brutally killed by vampires. Amy is a hippie, and Jason begins to really fall for her rather than his usual friends with benefits sorts of relationships, but he also learns that Amy's addiction brings out a dark side of her, since they kidnap a rather harmless vampire named Eddie to use him as a V source. Amy and Jason are deeply at odds about keeping Eddie, since Jason feels that it's deeply wrong the more he gets to know him, and when Jason attempts to let him go, Amy kills Eddie. Despite this, they both agree to stop V after "one last trip," but naturally, this ends up with Amy's death at the hands of Bon Temps' serial killer.

Not knowing anything else, since he was so high, and distraught with grief over her death, Jason confesses to the police that he's the killer. As he waits in his cell, a church that specifically preaches hatred of vampires called the Fellowship of the Sun comes to visit him, since they think that as the killer, he's doing God's work by killing women tainted by vampires. Of course, it's found that Jason is innocent when the real killer is caught, so Jason is released, but with a new-found inspiration in the book he was given by the Fellowship of the Sun.

So, naturally, he gets more involved with this church, and by chance, gets a chance to go the Light of Day Institute, which is billed as a leadership summit, but it's really a sort of training camp for killing vampires in the name of God. He does find that he's at odds with some of their more extreme views, however, since they insult his sister for sleeping with a vampire and Jason is still deeply affected by Eddie's death. However, as Jason spends more time at the institute, he also gets into a sexual relationship with the church leader's wife. Meanwhile, as events continue, the Institute builds a giant cross to make a vampire meet the sun, which kills them. Jason knows about this and is somewhat troubled, but when he learns that Sookie is also being held captive, Jason finally breaks ties with the church to go save his sister.

Sookie and Jason return to Bon Temps, but only to find it in the midst of crazy orgy parties (things got weird while they were gone because of a rogue maenaed), and Jason once again steps up to help save people. Well, make an attempt. It doesn't work out that great, and he gets entranced by the maenaed's spell too, but A for effort. When the maenaed is killed and the spell is broken, Jason comes across a distraught man holding one of the policemen of the town at knife-point, and not fully understanding the situation, shoots and kills him. Jason is disturbed by his own actions, but the policeman, Andy, covers up the murder, but Jason is distraught. In a drunken conversation with Andy, Jason gets the idea in his head that he could be a policeman, and is accidentally brought to the site of a meth bust, where Jason is able to turn his feelings at killing a person into a sense that he can help others. Jason starts to seriously pursue being a policeman (with poor results), but ends up blackmailing Andy for a desk job. Not quite understanding that desk job doesn't mean police privileges, Jason sees a woman he saw at the meth bust and chases her and pulls her over (shirtless and barely wearing pants, no less). She tells him that her name is Crystal, and Jason clearly is attracted to her, but she drives away before he can do anything but invite her to the local bar.
